Dear School Community,

I am thrilled to share some outstanding news that highlights the resilience and hard work of our students and educators here in Englewood, and across several other New Jersey districts.

Nine low-income districts in New Jersey, including Englewood, have defied national trends and are now performing above pre-pandemic achievement levels in reading, math, or both. This remarkable progress is documented in the latest release of the Education Recovery Scorecard, a comprehensive study led by renowned institutions such as Stanford University, Harvard University, and Dartmouth College. The Scorecard compares learning loss and recovery across thousands of districts nationwide.

Englewood’s success can be attributed to our targeted efforts, particularly our use of high-impact tutoring and free summer learning programs. These initiatives have been pivotal in addressing learning loss, with a special focus on our most vulnerable students. As Superintendent Hazelton shared, “We have been very intentional about targeting our most fragile students, especially those in the free and reduced lunch program.” This targeted approach has shown significant growth among low-income students, though there is still work to be done to close the achievement gap.

Our district also received the state’s high-impact tutoring grant, aimed at helping third and fourth graders recover from the pandemic’s effects. While initial enrollment numbers were below capacity, after focused outreach to families, we now have a waitlist for the program, underscoring its success and importance in our community.

Englewood is proud to stand alongside other New Jersey districts—Union City, Woodlynne, Lakewood Township, Ventnor City, Commercial Township, Garfield, Hillside, and Beverly City—that are achieving remarkable progress despite the challenges of the past few years.

This progress is a testament to the dedication of our teachers, administrators, and families. Together, we are making a lasting impact on the lives of our students, and we will continue to build on this momentum as we work toward even greater success.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to our students’ future.

Carpe diem,

Dr. Marnie Hazelton

Superintendent of Schools
